It has been roughly one year since the S&P 500 hit its low point of the COVID-19 market crash. The last year has been challenging and the human tragedy significant but not all the effects of the virus have been negative. One area where the coronavirus appears to have had a positive effect is on the environment.
It was a year like no other. Following a good start, rising 5% to mid February, the S&P 500 fell 34% between February 19 and March 23 as COVID-19 began wreaking havoc with global markets and economies. Recognizing the significant economic risk and with the memory of the damage the financial crisis caused still relatively vibrant, governments and central banks responded aggressively with historic monetary and fiscal stimulus.
There is so much to worry about – a second wave of COVID, US Presidential elections, ongoing global trade tensions, large government deficits, and high market volatility to name a few concerns. In an environment where dividend futures are implying a double digit decrease for the broader market through 2022 and overall anxiety remains high, good things are still occurring in many specific situations.
Our firm’s name comes from the famous gate in Bristol, England where many explorers set out to establish new trade routes. The gyrations of the market over the past several quarters have given us some sense of what it must have felt like crossing the North Atlantic during the Age of Exploration in the 15th century.
Dollar-Cost-Averaging is an effective process used by investors as a way to place a fixed dollar amount into an investment on a recurring basis. It is a popular strategy among financial planners and advisors who often recommend clients invest a constant amount at the beginning of each selected period.
The goal of investing at Bristol Gate is to grow income and capital over time. However, during an adverse market shock such as the one we are currently experiencing with the COVID-19 virus, our defensive nature kicks in to protect ourselves from near-term potential losses.
In May 2019, Bristol Gate celebrated its 10-year anniversary of our US Equity Strategy with investment results that we are very proud of. In looking back we have analyzed how each part of our investment process contributed to the strategy’s results and believe this is repeatable and sustainable over the next 10 years.
2019 marked a number of milestones for Bristol Gate. Our US Equity Strategy celebrated its 10-year anniversary in May, our firm AUM surpassed the US$1 billion mark and both our US and Canadian Equity Strategies received Morningstar’s 5 Star rating. It was also a year of change.
